smallest step

It takes more force to get an object moving than it does to keep it moving. Our lives are the same way.

The most difficult part of making a change is to first get started.

Once we do that, the momentum begins to build naturally, and it becomes a matter of time and patience.

I talk to people everyday who tell me, “All this advice and information on your website is great. But I just don’t know how to get started.”

I often don’t know what else to say but “just choose something small and start doing it today.”

Don’t wait for tomorrow. Don’t make an elaborate plan. Don’t even read another article on this website, until you have started taking some kind of action.

Just do this:

  • Name one area in your life that you want to improve.
  • Ask yourself, “What is the smallest step I could possibly take to begin turning this area of my life around?
  • Do that today.
  • Give yourself credit – pat yourself on the back for your small victory.
  • Take that motivation and good feelings into tomorrow.
  • Stay in motion.

In words, it’s simple – almost too simple. But you need to put it into action.

You need to actually practice turning your life around and moving it in a new direction. You need to get things in motion.

If you find it hard to overcome your inertia, then try thinking even smaller.

For example, if you’re really procrastinating on paying your taxes, maybe the first step is to just “write a note” and post it on your fridge. You have to start somewhere, so find where that is.

Take the smallest step in the right direction, then keep going.
