Have you ever come across that person who is just different for the sake of being different? This usually describes the “fashionable non-conformist.”
It doesn’t matter what they are choosing – what to do, what to say, what to think, or what to wear – the fashionable non-conformist always needs to go against the herd.
They hate things that are “popular” because they are “popular.” And they often feel they need to stick out whenever they can to protect their own sense of identity and self-worth.
It’s true that society doesn’t always know what is best for you. Non-conformity can often be an important part of finding your own self and carving your own path in life. We’re not all going to be exactly the same.
However, when you find yourself being a non-conformist just because you can, then you may still have some maturing to do.
There’s a big difference between being a fashionable non-conformist and a rational non-conformist:
- Fashionable Non-Conformist: Being different for the sake of being different, because you want to stand out from others and get attention.
- Rational Non-Conformist: Being different because you genuinely have different beliefs, values, and preferences than others.
This distinction is going to vary depending on the individual, the key is that you are honest with yourself.
Remember, conformity itself isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes the majority of people are right. For example, most people don’t steal or kill, but you probably don’t think it’s a good idea to go against the crowd on those beliefs and choices.
You shouldn’t feel bad about conformity, especially if it aligns with something you truly believe in. This is the main difference between a fashionable conformist and a rational conformist:
- Fashionable Conformist: Being the same for the sake of being the same, because you want to fit in and you want to be “normal.”
- Rational Conformist: Being the same because you genuinely have similar beliefs, values, and preferences as others.
At the end of the day, you should never do, say, or think anything simply because it is fashionable or you think it makes you look good, but because you have a rational interest in it and you see the value in it for yourself.
Keep in mind, being different for the sake of trying new things can be healthy sometimes, but we have to be careful not to let it go overboard and let ourselves become a fashionable non-conformist.
